Mobile phones - getting a better deal

1. Work out how many minutes and texts you think you will need. Try not to underestimate your use as you will end up paying more every month than you want to but likewise don’t pay for something that you won’t use. You can always buy a text block at a later date which can work out cheaper.

2. AVOID being ripped off by specialist mobile phone insurance.

Mobile phones are getting more and more expensive and companies are pushing you to take out insurance to cover loss or theft. £7.50 a month or £90 a year is a lot of money for something you may not need. Did you know that in most cases your phone will be covered under a home insurance policy or a warranty. If it is, there may be no need to take out separate cover.

Remember your phone is likely to come with a warranty for the first year - resort to this if it breaks in that time.

3. WATCH out for text messages offering picture downloads, news and football score alerts - even if they are marketed as free. If you reply to the message, you could unwittingly sign up to the service and be sent pictures or messages daily at up to £1.50 each. So make sure you read any terms and conditions.

4. IF you buy a new ring tone for your phone, be careful that you do not agree to a long-term contract at the same time. You could be sent different ring tones each week at up to £3 a time.

5. Check the charges for using it abroad for when you want to keep in touch with your friends when traveling or on holiday.
